The red cross of St George on a white field was an emblem of the English Army, and until 1606 an ensign of merchant and naval ships. From 1606 to 1801 it was a Jack of merchant ships. According to legend, St George saved a princess from a dragon and with its blood made the sign of the cross on his white shield.
